The duties of the Commissioner include the following:

• Maintaining a register of data users and computer bureaux and making it publicly available.
• Disseminating information on the Act and how it works.
• Promote compliance with the Data Protection Act.
• Encourage the development of Codes of Practice to help data users to comply with the principles.
• Considering complaints about breaches of the Principles or the Act.
• Prosecute offenders, or serve notices on those who are contravening the Principles.
