Ascent Legal helps teach students about the Scottish legal sector

Ascent Legal, a leading debt rehabilitation firm based in Glasgow, has visited students at the city’s Clyde College to talk about how to enter a career in law and explain the fundamentals of the Scottish legal system.

The firm has a track-record of carrying out a variety of pro-bono activity in partnership with schools, as well as providing work experience opportunities. Previous projects have involved participating in mock trial demonstrations.

Myra Scott, Ascent’s Head of Legal and Pro-Bono Partner, said: “We have a long-standing relationship with Glasgow Clyde College whereby we provide regular in-depth workshops about the Scottish legal system. Students of mixed ages participate and we enjoy the occasions very much - sparking an interest in the next generation of young people to enter into the sector.”

Yvonne Parker, Glasgow Clyde College’s Head of Curriculum – Business, said: “Myra Scott has been one of Glasgow Clyde College’s most valuable partners for a number of years. This year, she liaised with lecturers to deliver a talk to business students about the rules of the Scottish legal system, some of her experiences in the courts and other aspects of her work. This makes the subject come alive for the students – a real solicitor who is lively and entertaining and gives a very positive image of law as a career.

She continued: “A visit from Myra greatly enhances students learning and understanding of Scottish law. Myra is also able to impart her experiences of being involved in the recruitment and selection of employees. The students are genuinely engaged and interested and everyone in the group made a contribution to the discussions.”
